We are excited to announce our recent investment in Wigo!
Wigo is the "who's going out" app for college students. With Wigo, you will always know who at your school is going out and where your friends are headed. You can create your own event and invite your friends to join you or browse the different events taking place on your campus and join one of them. Users also have the ability to chat with other event attendees and post relevant pictures to the event's page for the school community to see that night or even the next day. The app is currently only available for college students that have been verified by their school's community and also have a valid .edu email addresses.
At KEC we think that Wigo has the ability to change the way that college students plan their daily and weekly social lives. We have seen a number of companies trying to solve similar social problems, but none have been nearly as successful as Wigo in targeting the college demographic. Wigo's approach of onboarding college campuses is unique, as school's are "locked" until enough students from that school have downloaded the app and signed up on the waiting list. Long term however, we see Wigo as the destination to discover events happening in your immediate area (not just your college campus) and that its userbase will extend far beyond the college demographic.
Wigo has a bright, young team that understands the current social problems and how to effectively target college students. Co-founder Ben Kaplan was a Division I hockey player at Holy Cross before dropping out in the Spring of 2014 to pursue Wigo full-time and co-founder Giuliano Giancaglia is a recent MIT graduate with undergraduate and graduates degrees in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. So far, the Wigo team has executed well in acquiring users as the app has been requested at more than 1,200 campuses, is in use at 75 schools, and has more than 100,000 active users.
We are also fortunate to be joined by a great syndicate of investors. GGV Capital, Great Oaks Venture Capital, and Greylock Partners also participated in this round and join Wigo's exceptional group of Angel Investors including Kevin Colleran from Facebook, Tinder co-founders Sean Rad and Justin Mateen, Kayak.com co-founder Paul English, and Super Bowl champion Vince Wilfork.
